But tucked inside this city is a thriving underground of vinyl obsessives, indie fashion designers, and alternative music scenes that most tourists never stumble across. These communities don't just exist alongside mainstream Japanese culture — they actively push back against it.
In America, a convenience store is where you stop when you've run out of options. In Yokohama — and really, all of Japan — the konbini is something else entirely: a social institution, a community anchor, and a daily ritual wrapped in fluorescent lighting. Once you understand what's really going on inside that 7-Eleven, you'll never look at a corner store the same way again.
Nobody warns you about the small stool. Or the specific way you're supposed to use it. Or the fact that every Japanese person in the room will absolutely notice if you don't. Here's what I wish someone had told me before my first onsen experience in Yokohama — and why, once you get past the initial awkwardness, it might be the most genuinely relaxing thing you do in Japan.
